The valley that inspired Tolkien

CultureRecommended

In 1911 the nineteen-year-old J. R. R. Tolkien walked through the Lauterbrunnen Valley during his journey through the Swiss Alps. The steep rock faces, waterfalls and snow-capped peaks later found their way into his mountain visions of Middle-earth, and the valley is now closely associated with the inspiration for Rivendell.

The story is best discovered on foot. Start at the Staubbach Falls and continue through the valley without the need to collect individual “film locations”. The power of the experience lies in the landscape itself, which was able to set the imagination in motion.
